Signs Your Fuse Box Needs Replacing
Your home’s fuse box is the place where all of your electrical systems are centralised. A fuse box that is working properly is essential for keeping your home safe and its electricity functioning.
At Full Circuit Electrical, our accredited team has spent more than 20 years providing safe and legally compliant replacement fuse boxes to homeowners across York, Harrogate, Ripon and the surrounding areas, such as Malton and Leeds.
In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the signs that indicate your fuse box may need replacing.
What is a fuse box, and what does it do?
A fuse box, also known as a consumer unit, is the central location for all electrical systems within a property. The box contains circuit breakers or house fuses for a property’s sockets, lighting, appliances and all other electrical features. It also contains a master switch for the entire property as well as individual switches for specific elements. This provides a centralised place where systems can be switched on and off.
The main purpose of a fuse box is to supply the property with electricity as well as keep it safe from the risk of fire. If a fault is detected, the fuse board will interrupt the flow of electricity by cutting it off at the source.
Some other ways a fuse box keeps us safe include:
- Prevents electric shocks
- Monitors wiring and prevents overloading
- Stops dangerous short circuits
- Protects electrical equipment from surges
How do I know I need a new fuse box/consumer unit?
There are several signs that a new fuse box may be required, including:
- It makes buzzing or humming sounds
If your fuse box is buzzing or making any other strange noises, this is a sign it may need to be replaced. Buzzing is sometimes a normal part of electrical operation, but if this buzzing is persistent and accompanied by other sounds like crackling, humming or popping, then it is likely a sign of a problem.
- Your fuse box keeps tripping
If your electrical consumer unit is constantly tripping then it might mean a replacement is required. Fuses trip when an electrical fault has been detected, so if the fuse box keeps tripping then you definitely have some kind of problem. While this could be another electrical issue, it might also mean the fuse box itself is faulty.
- It smells funny
If an unpleasant and noticeable odour is coming from the fuse box, there is likely internal damage that needs urgent attention.
- It is an outdated model
Modern fuse boxes come with residual current devices (RCDs) installed. These additional safety features prevent electric shocks and significantly reduce the chance of electrical fires. Older models do not come with RCDs, meaning your fuse box is not as safe as it should be. Since 2008, it has been a legal requirement for all new and rewired homes to feature RCD fuse boxes.
- Physical signs of damage
If you’ve noticed physical damage to your fuse box, a replacement should be considered as this could become a significant hazard.
- Flickering lights
If your lights are constantly flickering or dimming and there isn’t a problem with the lighting system itself, the fuse box could be the issue and a replacement may be needed.
How often do fuse boxes need to be replaced?
While there is no mandatory timeline for replacing fuse boxes, on average they will need to be replaced every 15 to 20 years. However, they may need to be replaced sooner if there are any problems with the fuse box, such as the ones we’ve outlined in this article.
You may also consider replacing a fuse box as part of a home renovation, especially if you have an older model or one that does not feature the important RCDs.
